About

To move is to live, and to live is to move.

Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, James grew up playing sports from soccer to skateboarding. He started weight training at twelve and later took up boxing, Muay Thai kickboxing and yoga. His desire to coach came from having family members and close friends who struggled to build healthy habits and lose weight. After successfully helping them achieve their goals he decided coaching was the right career for him. Over the years he’s worked with clients from high school youth to senior citizens, including physique competitors, recreational athletes, and people coming back from injury, helping them lose body fat, gain muscle, and lead more active lives.

His sessions are concentrated, but also fun and enjoyable. Your goal is his goal. Whether you want to compete, recover, or just feel like yourself again, the plan gets built around you.

The current roster runs the full range: men, women, families, couples, LGBTQ+ and groups training together. From high school youth to senior citizens, beginners through competitive athletes, the goals and aspirations span just as wide: first pull-up, getting back to lifting after surgery, a stage-ready physique, a tactical selection, menopause-stage strength, a 5K under 23 minutes, or simply moving without pain again.

Timeline & expectations

How the work unfolds.

Every client is unique. The plan gets tailored to your body, history, and schedule. This is how the early arc typically runs.

  1. 01
    Phase 1

    Assess & build the foundation

    • Intro to deep core training
    • Muscular balance assessment and correction
    • Intro to nutrition: the science and how to apply it
    • Intro to basic strength training and muscular development
    • Lifestyle habit assessment
    • Goal creation
  2. 02
    Phase 2

    Build strength & independence

    • Goal tracking
    • Continued muscular balance development
    • More advanced lifting techniques
    • Intro to cardio training
    • Continued lifestyle habit development
    • Independent homework in the gym and at home
  3. 03
    Phase 3

    Power, conditioning & athleticism

    • Continued progress tracking
    • Maximal strength development and continued evolution of strength training
    • Intro to explosive conditioning
    • Continued cardiovascular development
    • Speed, agility, and quickness

Where you start depends on your current condition and lifestyle habits, so not everyone begins at Phase 1. The phases are not strictly linear, and you do not move on until the current one is done. The more consistent you are, the faster you move through. Some people advance quickly, others stay in a phase longer, and that is exactly how it should be.

Pricing

01Pedro P.Weight Loss

Pedro was on a quest to change his entire image and appearance when I first met him. His nutrition and training were on point, and every week like clockwork he lost at least 2 lbs by following a meal plan and weight training regimen. We did high-intensity workouts and boxing on top of that to increase his weekly calorie burn. He is now on his way to becoming a trainer himself. Congrats, Pedro!

02Samantha S.Body Recomp

When Samantha came to me, she already had an active lifestyle dancing regularly but had never been on a serious lifting program for gaining strength and didn't know how to go about eating to lose weight. With my help and her tenacity, we changed her eating and lifestyle habits, and she learned fundamental strength training movements as well as cardiovascular conditioning via running and sprinting. We currently train once a week to continue her gains and growth.

03Obii O.Body Recomp

Obii was in shape most of his adult life until the busyness of earning his PhD and career pursuits made it difficult to keep fit. We audited his eating and exercise habits, and I put him on a lifting program 3 days a week while we did boxing conditioning and HIIT-style workouts once or twice a week. He went from 260 lbs to 219 lbs.

04Katy S.

Katy's first reason for training was to get stronger and feel better, but as we continued to train, her goals shifted toward body recomposition along with becoming as strong as possible. About 9 months into our training she got engaged, and from then on we trained for her wedding day. We trained twice a week, focusing on her diet, compound lifts and lifestyle habits so she looked and felt her best for her wedding day.

Zach S. - beforeBEFORE

05Zach S.Body Recomposition

Zach came to me with the goal of reversing his pre-diabetes, losing body fat and increasing his cardiovascular endurance. After we audited his eating, we started compound strength training and prescribed cardio sessions to improve his conditioning and endurance. We trained twice a week with a well-rounded approach to fitness: cardio, strength, balance, bodyweight training and boxing.

06Jesse R.Body Recomp

Jesse, like many clients, wanted to lose body fat and also gain muscle. We had injuries to work around, but we still got him from 180 lbs to 153 lbs. After 9 months of training, we decided he was ready to train on his own, and he is still continuing his progress.

07Max D.

Max is a Portland, Oregon client and one of my first. He came to me because he had a wedding and a vacation in Mexico coming up and needed to fit into his suit and look good on the beach. From the beginning of April to the beginning of June, we trained twice a week with high-intensity cardio conditioning and boxing. He followed a full-body, 3-day strength training split that I wrote, and we got him to this lean build in just two months.
